As trial counsel at Nguyen Leftt, John is involved with many of the firm’s complex injury litigation matters – including cases involving brain injury, burn injury, construction accidents, motor vehicle collisions, premises liability injury, defective product injury and patients affected by medical malpractice.
His experiences before becoming an attorney – as a construction laborer and an NYPD supervisor – give him a unique perspective, a thorough knowledge of New York’s labor laws, and the skills to investigate difficult cases and achieve justice for clients. John has legendary street smarts and is renowned for his ability to get to the truth of injury cases quickly and efficiently, identifying and pursuing those who cause harm to our clients.
John has been called a “matador in the courtroom,” and “fierce”, “deadly”, and “elegant” by his jurors. He is widely regarded and respected in the legal community by judges, by his peers, and by his adversaries. John takes great pride in receiving injury case referrals from defense lawyers against whom he litigates.
John’s past litigation and trial results have been profiled in the New York Law Journal and New York Verdicts and Settlement Reporter. John has been sought after by the media for his insights regarding catastrophic construction worker injuries. He attained one of the highest premises liability verdicts for an injured worker in New York State in 2016*.
As a police supervisor, John oversaw hundreds of vehicle crash investigations, including those involving fatal pedestrian collisions. John’s investigative skills have also uncovered multiple instances of corporate cover-ups, falsifications of official accident and incident reports, and other wrong-doings.
Achieving justice for innocent, injured victims — especially those who cannot speak for themselves –motivates John to look harder, dig deeper, and not accept assurances that everything was done properly, safely, as required by law or “by the book.”
John has an intimate and personal knowledge of the dangers faced by hardworking New Yorkers. Coming from a large police family, John made his way through college first as a construction laborer in Local Union No. 79, working on construction and building projects here in the five boroughs. The grandson of a Union Sandhog labor leader and the sibling of multiple Local #3 members, John has been involved in supporting the construction industry for over four decades and has helped injured construction industry workers recover very significant compensation for their injuries*.
During his tenure with the NYPD, he served in multiple commands and was awarded more than two dozen medals and commendations. John was personally awarded the Community Police Officer of the Year by the Police Commissioner. After promotion, John was selected as the sole recipient of the Police Department’s fellowship to attend Harvard University, where he was awarded a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. At Harvard, John further developed his problem-solving skills, which serve our clients well. His tenacious representation of clients wronged by big companies is well-known and respected throughout the legal community. Before leaving the NYPD, John was assigned as a supervising attorney in the Department’s Legal Bureau.
John has been repeatedly recognized for his advocacy accomplishments: he was named as one of the Best Attorneys in America, and a Fellow of the National Association of Distinguished Counsel, as well as designated a Top 25 Medical Malpractice Attorney. He is also a member of the Million Dollar Advocate’s Forum – less than 1% of attorneys in the United States share this distinction. John is a proud Fellow of the National Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), and was elected to, and remains on, the Board of Directors of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association (NYSTLA). John was inducted into the NYPD Honor Legion, and often speaks to law enforcement and construction industry groups about workplace safety and workplace injuries.
John graduated magna cum laude from the City University of New York, received his Masters from Harvard, and received his JD from Fordham Law School, where he graduated with honors. John is admitted to practice law in state and federal courts in New York and Massachusetts. Prior to becoming trial counsel to Nguyen Leftt, John was a partner at a renowned plaintiff’s malpractice and personal injury firm in New York, where he and his partners litigated matters that resulted in over $100 million dollars in verdicts and settlement for injured clients*.
